Normal as normal gets. One dark evening a local broad casting network announced the arrival of a volcanic eruption. It was no big deal for half of the world, they said, but the western hemisphere would have problems with fog. "Do not panic, evacuate now, if you must," but most people didn't. It was fine the first week, there were no worries, but as the smog blotted out the sun more and more, day by day, the citizens became worried. Soon it covered the entire world and no one felt safeā¦ for a reason. A year later and only a few remained. Most of them had died out due to power outages and lack of heating. Without a sun, snowstorms and blizzards were never ending. The darkness that loomed above was too much for some, physically and mentally. Those that didn't jump off a bridge onto solid ice below, or hang themselves in their basements were often killed by starvation or extreme frost bite. Dysentery wasn't uncommon either. A news broadcast came on once every month, on December 1st, the broadcast never came, the air was still, and there was no movement on the barren landscape that was earth.
Meanwhile
Animals all around were also dying off, but a select few were able to survive through the terrible mini-ice age. A small carnival was stuck frozen in time, a still life to the barren landscape. After three years, every homosapien involved was dead, and many of their animals. Thankfully, a clever Hyena escaped his steal barred cage and helped a few other animals out as well. They found refuge in the wood-work of the game stands and bunked in near-by caves with other animals who had survived.
After decades of the never-ending blizzard, the sun finally peaked beyond the smog covered skies. The world warmed up enough for some of the ice to melt and on good nights, the temperatures are even slightly above freezing. But the animals of thirty years later are far more adapted to this climate, how will they survive if the world goes back to normal?
